ADHD assessment Melbourne
At Vida Psychology, we provide comprehensive, evidence-based ADHD assessment services in Melbourne for clients aged six and up. If you have been wondering whether ADHD explains some of what you or your child experiences day to day, whether that shows up at school, at work, or simply in the gap between knowing what needs to be done and actually being able to do it, our team is here to help you find clarity through a process that feels considered, respectful and easy to understand.
We are located in North Melbourne, close to public transport, and just minutes from the CBD.
What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, impulse control, activity levels, and executive functioning. For many people, it can influence everyday things like planning, staying organised, starting tasks, managing time, and regulating emotions. ADHD does not look the same for everyone, which is one reason it can go unrecognised for years, especially in girls, women and people who have learned to mask or compensate for their symptoms.
ADHD symptoms may include:
- Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks that feel repetitive, slow or uninteresting
- Poor time management, missed appointments, or regularly misplacing belongings in a way that feels hard to keep on top of
- Restlessness, fidgeting or a sense of needing to move or talk
- Acting on impulse, interrupting others, or making decisions quickly and later regretting them
- Finding it hard to get started, stay organised, or follow through, even when you really want to
- Feelings that come on quickly, feel bigger than expected, or are hard to put into words
- Hyperfocus on tasks or interests that capture attention, sometimes for hours at a time
- Years of being described as scattered, disorganised or “not living up to potential”, despite consistent effort
At Vida Psychology, we understand that seeking an ADHD assessment can bring up a mix of emotions, including relief, frustration or even grief for years spent without answers. Our clinicians aim to create a calm and supportive environment where clients feel respected and heard, whatever has brought them to this point.
Our ADHD assessment process
An ADHD assessment can be useful where you suspect ADHD in yourself or your child, or where school, work or everyday tasks are consistently harder than they should be, despite knowing exactly what needs to happen.
We understand that every person is different, so our assessment process is shaped around the individual’s age, presentation, and goals for seeking an assessment. Our ADHD assessment services are generally completed across three sessions:
Initial interview
Around 50 minutes, with a parent or carer present for clients under 18. This first appointment involves gathering background information, discussing current concerns, and exploring what has led you to seek an assessment, including developmental and medical history, attention and concentration difficulties, emotional regulation, relationships, education or work.
Structured assessment interview
Around 50 minutes, again with a parent or carer present for clients under 18. Before this session, you or someone close to you will need to complete a set of questionnaires. For children, this is typically a parent and a teacher; for adults, it is usually you and a parent, where possible, since ADHD assessment guidelines call for evidence of how symptoms present across more than one setting and across time.
Feedback session
Around 50 minutes, scheduled roughly two weeks after the assessment session to allow time for scoring and interpretation. We talk through the findings, the diagnostic assessment outcome where applicable, and what the recommendations mean in practice, with a parent or carer present for clients under 18.
Following this, clients receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, diagnostic outcome, and recommendations that reflect the person’s daily life and goals. This report can support access to a psychiatrist for a medication discussion, NDIS applications, or workplace and educational adjustments.
Adult ADHD assessment Melbourne
For many adults, particularly women and people with other neurodivergent experiences, undiagnosed ADHD can go unrecognised throughout childhood because it doesn’t always match the more visible, hyperactive presentation often associated with young boys. Instead, it may have looked like daydreaming, disorganisation, emotional sensitivity, procrastination, or being labelled as capable but needing to “try harder”, when in reality, a lot of effort was already going into keeping up.
An adult ADHD assessment may help you:
- Understand patterns around attention, organisation, and follow-through
- Recognise how impulsivity or emotional intensity may have shaped relationships and decisions
- Identify your strengths as well as areas where support may help
- Access a psychiatrist review to discuss whether prescribed medication may be an appropriate option
- Explore practical strategies for work, study, and daily functioning
- Understand overlapping experiences with autism, anxiety, or other mental health conditions
Many adults have spent years blaming themselves for things that were never simply about discipline or motivation, and that can take a real toll over time. Our psychologists take a neuro-affirming approach and provide a space where you can talk openly about your history, experiences and goals without judgement.
ADHD assessment for children and adolescents
Recognising ADHD early can support a child’s learning, relationships and sense of self as they grow. An ADHD assessment for children and adolescents can help families understand what is driving certain behaviours and what kind of support might genuinely help.
Parents may seek an assessment if their child experiences:
- Difficulty staying focused on schoolwork or tasks that require sustained attention
- Trouble sitting still, waiting their turn, or staying seated when expected to
- Acting before thinking, whether in the classroom, at home, or with friends
- Losing belongings, forgetting instructions, or seeming to “switch off” mid-conversation
- Differences in executive functioning, such as finding it hard to organise, plan, or get started, even when they might want to
- Big emotional reactions that come on quickly and are hard to settle
- Ongoing feedback from teachers about concentration, organisation, or impulsivity
We work collaboratively with families to provide an assessment process that feels respectful and manageable. We understand that every child’s presentation is their own, and we aim to provide recommendations that support them across home, school, and daily life.

Why seek an ADHD assessment?
An ADHD assessment can offer clarity that is hard to reach on your own, and people come to us for all sorts of reasons. Some of the most common include:
Making sense of a lifetime of confusion
An assessment can put language to patterns that were previously put down to laziness, disorganisation, or not trying hard enough.
Access to support
A formal diagnosis can open the door to psychiatric review for ADHD medication, psychological strategies, and adjustments at work or in education that reflect how someone actually thinks and functions.
Letting go of years of self-blame
Understanding the neurological basis of ADHD often eases years of being told to try harder or focus more and helps people see these difficulties as differences in brain function rather than a character flaw.
Being understood by the people closest to you
Partners, parents, children, and friends do not always know how to read forgetfulness, impulsivity, or emotional intensity. An ADHD diagnosis can help them see it as part of how someone is wired, rather than carelessness or a lack of interest.
The link between ADHD and mental health
ADHD rarely shows up in isolation. It can sit alongside autism, anxiety, depression or other mental health difficulties, and untangling what belongs to what is often part of the reason people seek an assessment in the first place. Some clients come to us after years of therapy for anxiety or low mood, only to find that undiagnosed ADHD was part of what they had been working around all along. Others begin the process expecting an ADHD diagnosis and find that autism is also part of the picture, which can bring its own sense of relief.
Our clinicians look at the full context of what someone is experiencing rather than assessing ADHD in a vacuum, so that the outcome reflects everything that is actually going on, not just the traits that prompted the referral in the first place.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an ADHD assessment take?
Most ADHD assessments involve three sessions of around 50 minutes each: an initial interview, a structured assessment interview, and a feedback session. Before the second session, you or someone close to you will need to complete some questionnaires, typically a parent and a teacher for a child, or you and a parent for an adult, where that’s possible. The feedback session is usually scheduled around two weeks after the assessment session to allow time for scoring and interpretation.
Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?
Yes. Many adults seek an ADHD assessment later in life after recognising long-standing patterns that were previously put down to personality or circumstance. A diagnosis in adulthood can bring clarity and open the door to support that genuinely fits.
Do you offer telehealth assessments?
Telehealth is available for therapy and ADHD assessments for those who prefer to be seen from home or are located outside Melbourne.
Can a psychologist prescribe ADHD medication?
No. As psychologists, we don’t prescribe medication, though we do provide therapeutic interventions for ADHD. If you would like to discuss medication, your GP can refer you to a psychiatrist, paediatric psychiatrist or paediatrician, who can confirm the diagnosis and talk through options with you. Some GPs also offer ADHD assessments themselves, though these don’t include the cognitive assessment component that a psychologist can provide.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is required to book an appointment.
You can attend as a private client, use private health cover, or access support as a self-managed NDIS participant. If you’re an Australian resident, you may also be eligible for Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).
