What is autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person experiences communication, relationships, sensory input, routines and the world around them. Autism exists across a spectrum, meaning every autistic person has their own strengths, challenges, preferences and presentation.

Autism traits may include:

  • Differences in social communication and interaction
  • Sensory sensitivities to sound, light, textures or environments
  • Strong interests or deep focus in specific topics
  • Preference for routine and predictability
  • Finding it hard to get started, stay organised, or follow through, even when you really want to
  • Feelings that come on quickly, feel bigger than expected, or are hard to put into words
  • Feeling overwhelmed in social or busy environments.
  • Social or workplace rules that nobody actually explains, but everyone else seems to understand.

At Vida Psychology, we understand that seeking an autism diagnosis can feel emotional, validating or uncertain. Our clinicians aim to create a calm and supportive environment where clients feel respected and heard.

Our autism assessment process

We understand that every person is different, which is why our assessment process is tailored to the individual’s age, presentation and needs.

Our ASD assessment services generally include:

Initial appointment

Your first appointment involves gathering background information, discussing current concerns and exploring the reasons for seeking an assessment. We may discuss developmental history, social communication experiences, sensory differences, emotional wellbeing, relationships, education or workplace challenges.

Assessment sessions

The assessment typically involves multiple assessment sessions using evidence-based tools, questionnaires, interviews and observational measures. Depending on the individual, we may also gather information from parents, caregivers, teachers or other relevant support people.

Our clinicians carefully consider the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder while also recognising the diverse ways autism may present across different ages, genders and life experiences.

Feedback session

Following the assessment, we provide a feedback session to discuss the findings, explain the outcome and answer any questions. We understand that this conversation can feel significant, so we aim to provide information in a supportive and accessible way.

Comprehensive written report

Clients receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, diagnostic outcome (where applicable), recommendations and practical strategies. This written report may also assist with accessing support services, educational adjustments or workplace accommodations.

Adult autism assessment Melbourne

For many adults, particularly women, adolescent girls, and people from neurodivergent communities, autism goes unrecognised until adulthood. Adult presentations of autism can look quite different from childhood stereotypes, as many autistic adults have developed coping strategies that may have masked their autistic traits from educators, health providers, and family members.

For many adults, receiving an adult autism diagnosis can provide more than just a label but a better understanding of themselves and their experiences.

An adult ASD assessment may help individuals:

  • Better understand social communication differences
  • Recognise sensory sensitivities and emotional overwhelm
  • Identify strengths and support needs
  • Improve relationships and self-understanding
  • Access workplace or educational accommodations
  • Explore helpful therapies and interventions
  • Understand overlapping experiences with anxiety or ADHD

Many adults have spent years masking or adapting their behaviour to fit social expectations, which can contribute to exhaustion, stress and burnout. Our psychologists take a neuro-affirming approach that recognises these experiences and aims to create a supportive assessment environment where you can feel comfortable discussing challenges, life experiences, and goals without judgment.

Autism assessment for children and adolescents

Early recognition of autism can make an enormous difference in a child’s development, wellbeing, and self-understanding. An autism assessment for children and adolescents can help families better understand their child’s needs, strengths and support requirements.

Parents may seek an assessment if their child experiences:

  • Differences in social communication and interaction (difficulty with eye contact, challenges understanding social cues, preference for solitary activities)
  • Restricted or repetitive interests and behaviours (lining up toys, intense focus on specific topics, preference for routine)
  • Sensory sensitivities (sensitivity to sounds, textures, lights, or smells)
  • Motor coordination differences
  • Differences in executive functioning (finding it hard to organise, plan, or get started even when they might want to)
  • Higher levels of anxiety
  • Heightened emotions that quickly overwhelm

At Vida Psychology, we work collaboratively with families to provide a supportive and respectful assessment process. We understand that every child is unique, and we aim to provide practical recommendations that can support children across home, school and daily life.

Why seek an Autism assessment?

An autism assessment can provide invaluable clarity and understanding. Many people pursue assessment for various important reasons:

Self-understanding

Gaining insight into why you experience the world differently can be transformative, offering explanations for long-standing patterns in communication, social relationships, sensory sensitivities, and executive functioning.

Access to support

An accurate diagnosis opens doors to tailored interventions, therapies, and accommodations that address your specific needs.

Reducing anxiety

Understanding your neurology often reduces anxiety and stress, as you recognize that differences aren’t personal failings but part of how your brain works.

Relationships

Clarity about autism can improve family relationships, helping loved ones understand your needs and communication style.

Practical next steps

A formal diagnosis provides guidance for workplace accommodations, education support, and accessing appropriate services.

For some people, understanding their neurodivergence can be deeply validating and empowering.

Our clinicians consider the broader picture when completing assessments and can assist in identifying any overlapping presentations.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an autism assessment take?

The assessment process varies depending on the individual’s age, presentation and needs. Most assessments are completed across three sessions: Initial interview, administering the assessment, and a feedback session.

For child clients, a cognitive assessment may also be completed to rule out or identify an Intellectual Developmental Disorder (IDD) before providing an ASD diagnosis. As part of best practice, when there are concerns about a child’s cognitive development, it is important that we include a cognitive assessment alongside the ASD assessment. This helps ensure that any diagnosis given is accurate and considers the child’s overall developmental profile. An additional cognitive assessment would only add one more session to the total amount of sessions required.

Can adults be diagnosed with autism?

Yes. Many adults seek an adult autism assessment later in life after recognising autism traits in themselves. A diagnosis later in adulthood can help provide clarity, validation and access to support.

Do you offer telehealth assessments?

Telehealth is available for therapy and ADHD assessments for those who prefer to be seen from home or are located outside Melbourne.

Can autism and ADHD occur together?

Yes. Autism and ADHD can co-occur, and many individuals experience many overlapping traits such as differences in executive function, emotional regulation and sensory processing.

Do I need a GP referral?

No referral is required to book an appointment.

You can attend as a private client, use private health cover, or access support as a self-managed NDIS participant. If you’re an Australian resident, you may also be eligible for Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP).

What does neuro-affirming actually mean?

A neuro-affirming approach means we see neurodivergence as a natural variation in how brains work, rather than something that needs to be fixed or corrected. In practice, this means we focus on your strengths, work with your natural patterns of thinking, and support you to thrive as you are.
