Finding Balance in Life

We would define balance as: 1) the even distribution of weight that enables someone or something to remain upright and steady; 2) a situation in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

Balance as a verb, is defined as “to place ‘something’ in a steady position so that it does not fall”. This definition can provide us with a way to think about the importance of managing the competing responsibilities and desires in our lives. Finding balance can help you to be physically and mentally healthy; and help you achieve a pleasant, joyful, and fulfilled life.

You may be asking yourself, ‘But I live in such a stressful world! How do I find and maintain balance between work, home commitments, social commitments, self-care, life admin, social media (…the list goes on)?’

Below are some practical tips for you to take into account when thinking about balancing things in your life so that you don’t fall!

  1. List it all.
Write a list of all the things that occupy your day and mind. What needs to be done at home, at work and everything in-between. Separate those lists by environments or contexts, if possible.
  2. Prioritize.
Go through your life demands, tasks and activities and determine which is a priority. This is an exercise that you could do with small and big tasks. Priorities are not necessarily linked to what we wish we could do or what we enjoy the most, but what needs to happen first in order to feel like you have things under control.
  3. Start with what feels doable.
Tackling the easiest or smallest task, such as making the bed, can help you to get started but do not avoid tackling the big tasks. Assess and re-assess the status of your tasks/demands and go from there.
  4. Eat well. Sleep enough. Exercise.
  5. The three pillars of good health! Do not underestimate any of these; they are extremely powerful in staying healthy.
  6. Learn to say ‘no’.
When you cannot take on any more responsibilities, just say no, politely and soundly. Look after yourself.
  7. Combine passionate dedication with religious self-care.
Ask for help when needed. Do not hesitate, it is never too late to seek help.
  8. Nurture Yourself

  9. Combine passionate dedication with religious self-care. Balance is all about learning to navigate the demands of your busy life with the need for looking after yourself.
  10. Reach out. Ask for help when needed. Do not hesitate, it is never too late to seek help.
